I'm keeping a nature journal: drawing, painting, and taking notes on the things I come across as a museum curator – field trips, observations of where I live, specimens collected from the wild or in the museum. I want to build drawing back into the way I observe the natural world.
Water-soluble 2B pencilThe native “jasmine”, Parsonsia heterophylla, has quite bizarre juvenile leaves that start off almost circular in a seedling and then gradually transmute into long and thin. The intermediate stages are interestingly blobby. I picked these leaves off a small plant growing in Gordon Park, drew them life-size on the paper, and used soluble pencil to create a grey wash.
