I have been making origami cranes from scraps of paper for years after my dad worked for a Japanese company and came home from Tokyo with beautiful origami paper. I have never given myself the time to perfect those cranes (which is the reason that to this day I have not used the paper for fear of spoiling it!) I realised recently I had been making them incorrectly all along, but this got me thinking about repetition and the desire for perfection of skill. It also made me think about where I made all those cranes; where was I? Who was I with? Who did I give them to? Over the following 100 Days I will capture a sense of place and memory into each origami bird I fold, through sketching, writing, mark-making, and you never know, I may perfect the crane enough to allow myself to finally use that beautiful Japanese paper.
