HAPA

All Days | Day by Day | Author Login

We are a design store based in Christchurch, Aotearoa NZ, and our focus is on supporting and promoting local artists and creatives.

As part of maintaining our creative discipline and focus on our core values, we will be photo documenting a different creation each day that showcases the wealth of creative talent in our beautiful city. Each item must be created or designed by a local Canterbury based artist/designer/creator, and available for purchase in one of our HAPA stores.

As our city rebuilds around us its important to continue to value and acknowledge the creatives, the misfits, the dreamers... and the small businesses that showcase them.

We are the cracks in the pavement, the foraged flowers from demolition sites, the opportunities that arise from chaos...and we are beautiful MAURI ORA!

Day 33: Tin Man Tales

The Tin Man is a hometown legend here in Christchurch!

He was born in 2001 as a one-off artwork crafted in wood and mixed media by local artist Tony Cribb. Since then things have gone from strength to strength for this little orange guy, his funny irreverent take on the world seems to touch souls everywhere.

He has become a friend to many - an observer of social commentary and a metaphor for exploring life with all its good, bad & wobbly bits.

Cribb has been exhibiting in galleries throughout New Zealand since 2001, with his works being held in private collections both locally and internationally. He describes his style as quirky with a dark sense of humour…Ill definitely throw in inspiring and uplifting and sometimes laugh-til-you-cry!

You could, if you wanted to, google Tony Cribb and you’ll read about the challenging journey he and his whanau have been on over the last 4 years, thats a story for another day - suffice to say - we are very grateful to have this special guy in our world, making the world a better place for the underdog, the downtrodden, the overlooked…with his wicked sense of humour, his sharp eye and his clever paintbrush.

Tony’s mantra is "leave the world a better place” - Tin Man agrees, and so do we.

Oh and PS - happy birthday you good fella :)
